Landscape and geological history
The Alzeyer Land is characterised by gentle, vine-covered hills, as well as woodland such as the state forest in the Vorholz near Offenheim. A prominent landmark is the 246-metre-high Petersberg between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim. Covered in vines, it offers wide-ranging views across the Wonnegau and the surrounding hill country. If you are interested in how the landscape was formed, the Museum of the City of Alzey also has an exhibition on geology and palaeontology relating to the Mainz Basin. Minerals, especially fossils, help illustrate its development over millions of years.
The same museum’s exhibition on prehistory and early history offers a different perspective on the past. It traces the cultural history of inner Rheinhessen from the Neolithic period through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period, covering more than 6,000 years. The two exhibitions have different focuses: one explores geological history and its evidence, the other the development of human cultures over long periods.
Trails, buildings and discoveries
The Alzey Art & Culture Trail runs through the vineyards and connects 20 works of art with 22 vineyard cottages along the way. In and around Flonheim, the white trulli are distinctive little vineyard buildings; they were built by migrant workers from Lombardy. To reach the Trullo on Adelberg on foot, you can take the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal. There are tables and benches right beside the trullo. The Hiwwel Route has a different focus: it crosses hills that repeatedly offer beautiful views.
There are also different ways to discover history. You can explore Alzey Castle on a town walk with trained guides or on your own. The Geistermühle is a historic mill complex with half-timbering and a fully preserved watermill; guided tours of the mill are available. The BohnErzWeg connects Dittelsheim-Heßloch, Framersheim, Gau-Heppenheim, Hochborn and Monzernheim. It leads to mining sites and a reconstructed ore-washing facility; information panels explain this part of the area’s history.
In Flonheim, around 60 gravestones arranged in rows also recall the history of the Jewish cemetery. Most of the stones are made of Flonheim sandstone. South of Eckelsheim, the Strandpfad der Sinne offers an unusual perspective on geological history: it runs along the beach slope of the former Steigerberg island. Within sight of the wave-cut cliff at the Eckelsheim gravel pit, layers of rock, boulders, gravel and sand follow one another, alongside plants from geological history.
Cycling and regional refreshments
Several different routes are available for cycling trips. The Selztal Cycle Route follows the Selz through the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. The Mill Cycle Route links historic mills and passes through scenic wine villages. The Rhine Terrace Route crosses idyllic wine villages and vineyard slopes, while the Zellertal Cycle Route branches off into the Zellertal valley. Cycling services in Alzey-Worms also include e-bike hire and charging, as well as help with inflating tyres and carrying out simple repairs.
At the Klosterhof wine bar in Flonheim, you can sample wines and enjoy them by the glass. Coffee, homemade cake and a small snack to accompany your wine are also available. You can tailor each day to your own interests: museum visits, trails through vineyards and hill country, historic sites or cycling routes each offer a different experience. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider which of these activities matter most for your stay.
