Wahlheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Wahlheimer Schelmen is a 53-hectare southeast-facing vineyard site in Wahlheim, situated at an elevation of 230 to 275 metres. Its soils consist of loess/pararendzina and limestone/rendzina. On the outskirts of the village, the renaturalised Weidasserbach meanders through the landscape. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Wahlheim can then continue searching for accommodation.

Culture and History

The Protestant Church at Obergasse 46 is a late Baroque hall church dating from 1750, with Romanesque sections of the nave and a former choir that was renovated in the 15th century. It was built in 1750 on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin.

Archaeological finds from the Celtic period have been documented in Wahlheim; remains of a Roman estate have also been identified. In 1939, the grave of a Frankish woman with rich grave goods from the Merovingian period was discovered next to Wahlheim’s church. Much archaeological material from Wahlheim is displayed at the Alzey Museum.

The history of milling is also preserved in several buildings: The former Ohligmühle at Mühlstraße 3 retains a millrace with the remains of an iron mill wheel and parts of its technical equipment. The former Schleifmühle at Mühlstraße 45 is a four-sided 19th-century mill complex with a large mill building dating from before 1885. The former Kellermühle at Obergasse 125/129 is a four-wing complex from the 18th or 19th century, with a Baroque house featuring a mansard roof. Several mills were historically operated along the Weidasserbach, including a hereditary mill belonging to the Teutonic Order.

Wahlheim was also the birthplace of the landscape, portrait and history painter Jakob Wick (1834–1912).

Wine

Weingut Burkhard offers wine tastings in its tasting room by prior arrangement. In summer, guided walks through the vineyards with wine tastings at several stops are offered. During these vineyard walks, regional snacks are served at selected locations.

Nature and Trails

The Alzeyer Land holiday region combines wine and nature experiences in Rheinhessen with walking, hiking and cycling. Themed cycle routes in Kettenheim can be reached via the rail connection in neighbouring Wahlheim. A cycle path to Wahlheim follows the Weidasser Bach away from the main road.
