Towers, Gates and Roman History
The approximately 1.2-kilometre-long “Marktbreit Tower Trail” is a circular route along Marktbreit’s town fortifications, some of which are still well preserved today. Along the way, you will encounter numerous towers and gates; information boards explain the structures. The route is considered family-friendly.
The Roman camp on Kapellenberg above Marktbreit opens up a different historical perspective. It dates from the Augustan period and covers around 37 hectares. Today, visitors can walk around the site on a circular route. This makes the visit different from the Tower Trail: the focus here is not on a succession of towers and town gates, but on the extent of a Roman camp. History enthusiasts can thus find two different ways to explore the past, without needing to take the same kind of circular walk.
Exploring the Main and Cultural Trails
The “TraumRunde” starts at the Main car park by the Old Crane, right on the banks of the Main. This starting point links the hike with the riverbank. The “Gnodstadt Triangle” cultural trail has a different focus: at 15 kilometres long, with nine stops, it provides information about the cultural landscape and connects Marktbreit with Ochsenfurt and Gnodstadt. The four wines and the topics covered give the experience its own character, distinct from routes focused on fortifications, Roman history or the cultural landscape.
Malerwinkel is also one of Marktbreit’s cultural attractions. Following extensive restoration, it was converted into a museum in 1991. Together with the cultural trail and the information boards along the Tower Trail, it gives a varied picture of the cultural offerings: a museum, a trail with nine stops and a circular route explaining individual elements of the town fortifications.
