City history in remarkable buildings

The Upper Gate, also known as Diebenturm, was built in the 13th century. The former prison cells are still preserved inside. These surviving cells date from the tower’s earlier use as a prison.

The Barockscheune Volkach Museum offers a different perspective on Volkach and the Mainschleife. The town opened it in 2003 in a renovated barn dating from 1714. The building features exposed shell-limestone masonry and an unusual mansard hipped roof. The permanent exhibition explores the history, landscape and culture of the Mainschleife, as well as the town’s cultural past. If you are interested not only in individual buildings but also in their cultural setting, you will find several themes brought together here in one exhibition.

The Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew is also part of Volkach’s historic character. The foundation stone for the present church was laid in 1413; construction continued until the 18th century. Its church tower is 54 metres high. Its long history of construction can therefore be traced through a specific measurement and a clearly defined time span.

The pilgrimage church of Maria im Weingarten is located near Volkach. During a guided tour, visitors learn about faith and customs, as well as Tilman Riemenschneider’s famous Madonna in the Rosary. For planning your excursions, this is a distinct cultural option alongside the topics that relate directly to the town.

Old Town, Franconian cuisine and wine

Volkach’s historic town centre is complemented by Franconian cuisine and numerous wine shops and wine bars. This gives your stay a culinary focus in addition to the museum and architectural history. If you primarily associate the town with regional cuisine and wine, you can make these venues a separate part of your trip without limiting your stay to a single museum or walking tour.

The Volkach Ticket offers a specific opportunity to sample the local wines: it allows you to visit participating wine shops and taste a Silvaner or another wine from their selection. The ticket is available at the Volkacher Mainschleife Tourist Information Office in Volkach Town Hall. This makes it easy to include the local wine scene in your visit; the wines on offer depend on each wine shop’s selection.

Concerts, wine tastings and markets are held in the market square. These different types of events make the square another focal point of the town: depending on the occasion, music, wine or market activity takes centre stage. No specific event date is provided, so plan your visit around the type of event that interests you.

By bike or on a nature walk

Cyclists also have a clear point of reference: the MainRadweg reaches Volkach at kilometre 29.2. The route to the historic market square branches off just before the Main bridge. If you are cycling the MainRadweg, you can use this turn-off to find your way around Volkach. The kilometre marker refers to the route and helps you pinpoint the town along the way.

The Wald- & Dorfrunde trail offers a different view of the surrounding area. It passes two lakes with abundant flora and fauna, which provide an ideal habitat for common toads. This adds a nature-focused experience to Volkach’s historical and culinary attractions.

A museum experience for young visitors

Since 2006, the town scribe of Volkach has been guiding children through the exhibition at the Barockscheune Museum. At six interactive stations, young visitors can crack a secret code and open a safe.
