Town Walls, Churches and Local History
The historic fortifications include a town wall with towers and gates, including the well-known Rödelseer Gate. As you walk through the town centre, you will also encounter old burghers’ houses and the churches that contribute to Iphofen’s distinctive townscape. St. Vitus Parish Church houses a Riemenschneider sculpture of John the Evangelist—a specific destination for anyone interested in church art.
Behind the town hall, the History Barn presents the “Iphöfer Geschichte(n)” exhibition. Its features include a talking town model, zoom displays and a lapidarium with Iphofen stone sculptures. The Knauf Museum Iphofen offers a different perspective: it presents more than 200 replicas of significant museum objects from around the world and holds exclusive special exhibitions each year alongside its permanent exhibition. If you are interested in the history of the museum building, the art patron and gypsum manufacturer Dr Alfons N. Knauf began converting a magnificent 1688 Baroque building in Iphofen into a private museum in the 1960s.
Winegrowing and Trails around Iphofen
The Iphofen Historical Vineyard illustrates important periods in Franconian winegrowing, from the late Middle Ages to the 1960s. The grape-variety educational trail along the Kronsberg vineyard site offers a different perspective on winegrowing, explaining important classic Franconian grape varieties. At the terroir f viewpoint in the Julius-Echter-Berg vineyard site, you can enjoy views across Iphofen and its vineyards.
For a hike through the Kronsberg vineyard site, you can follow the circular Kronsberg Trail, marked i 2. It runs for about 7 kilometres through the vineyard site. For a longer circular hike, take the approximately 13-kilometre N1 trail, which leads to natural attractions around Nenzenheim, a district of Iphofen. Enjoy scenic views at Wolfsee, from Andreas-Därr Tower and at the “Am Stöckig” site. The starting and finishing point is Nenzenheim sports ground.
Getting Here and Finding Your Way
Iphofen is on the Würzburg–Nuremberg railway line and is part of both the Mainfranken Transport Association (NVM) and the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN). The station is just outside the town. From there, you can reach the old town on foot in about 15 to 20 minutes or by bus via the Stadtgraben Ost or Feuerwehrhaus stops. The station has a park-and-ride car park with 180 spaces and toilet facilities. This information can help you plan your train journey and onward trip to the old town.
