The wayside shrine trail is a short, clearly defined way to explore wine and religion: its nine stops cover about 3 km. If you are looking for a designated hiking trail, you can also consider the Traumrunde Rödelsee.

The 474-metre-high Schwanberg rises close to Rödelsee. Its woodland and vine-covered slopes invite you to go for a walk or hike. Schwanberg offers another aspect of the landscape to consider when planning your trip, while the wayside shrine trail explicitly connects its themes with Rödelsee. If you mainly want to spend time outdoors, you can take these different options into account when choosing where to stay, without treating them as a single trail.

Jewish History and Franconian Craftsmanship

The Jewish District Cemetery in Rödelsee was first mentioned in 1432. Jews from more than 20 communities were buried there up to 1942. The cemetery covers just under 19,000 m² and, with 5,500 graves at its peak, is one of the largest surviving Jewish cemeteries in Germany. About 2,500 gravestones remain; their inscriptions can provide information about the people buried there. The cemetery is closed to visitors on Saturdays in observance of the Jewish Sabbath, so guided tours are also unavailable that day. Keep this restriction in mind when planning a visit.

You can encounter another part of the town’s history at the Elfleinshäusla. This faithfully restored, typical Franconian home, shop and winemaker’s house features a smithy as its central element. From May to October, it is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2 to 6 p.m.; visits can also be arranged by appointment. For groups of up to 20 people, a museum tour and, if available, a blacksmith demonstration can be arranged by prior registration. This makes it possible to plan a visit specifically around the house and its craft tradition.

Schloss Crailsheim is also part of Rödelsee’s history. Built in 1614 with a scroll gable, it subsequently became the residence of the Rödelsee branch of the von Crailsheim family. This historical context adds another chapter of local history to a visit to the places that tell the story of Jewish history and Franconian craftsmanship.

Vineyards, Tastings and a Festival Date

The “Küchenmeister” and “Schwanleite” vineyards have a distinctive microclimate that provides particularly favourable conditions for the grapes. If you are interested in wine, you can book a wine tasting at “terroir f Silvaner” through the local council. In Rödelsee, the Vinfothek at Schloss Crailsheim also combines a tourist information centre with a wine shop. Wine is therefore a key theme not only on the wayside shrine trail, but also at tastings and the Vinfothek.

The Rödelsee Wine Festival is held regularly on the first weekend in July. If you want your stay to include this date, the weekend offers a specific point of reference for planning your trip. Alongside the vineyards and tasting opportunities, the festival makes wine a distinct focus in addition to hiking and history.

Getting Here and Choosing Where to Stay

The nearest train station is in Iphofen, about 3 km from Rödelsee. Rödelsee can also be reached in about 20 minutes on VVG bus route 8111. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can first decide whether you want Rödelsee itself, with its wine and history, to be the focus of your stay. Nearby Schwanberg is another option to consider for hiking. Which of these possibilities matters most depends on whether you want to focus your trip more on wine, historic sites, or walks and hikes.
