Castell: Vineyards, Tulips and Hiking Trails

Castell combines a history of winegrowing with trails through the vineyards and a special spring bloom. Guided experiences, named waypoints and historical insights offer different perspectives. This gives you the option of deciding whether to focus your stay mainly on wine, a hike or local history.

Vineyards and Spring Bloom

A guided Silvaner experience combines a hike to Castell’s Hohnart, Schlossberg and Kirchberg vineyards with a tasting of three Silvaner wines in the vineyard. The experience is available by arrangement. Both the vineyards and Silvaner take centre stage.

The guided spring walk “A Riot of Colour in the Vineyard” follows the Casteller Schlossberg and draws attention to the bloom of the rare, protected wild vineyard tulips. Guided programmes are available by arrangement. Depending on the weather, the tulips bloom between 12 and 28 April; the timing varies from year to year. The two experiences therefore offer distinct focuses: the Silvaner experience combines a hike and a tasting, while the spring walk draws attention to a protected flower and its changing bloom time.

C5 Hiking Trail and Views

The C5 Castell hiking trail starts and ends in Castell. Along the way are the Gerichtslinde (court linden tree), wild vineyard tulips, the castle tower ruins and the Celtic rampart. Further along the trail, there are views across the Main Valley and, in fine weather, as far as the Rhön. The named landmarks and viewpoints offer different points of interest along the route: you can take an interest in the historical traces as well as the landscapes.

Castle Park and Museum Barn

Castell Castle Park was laid out from 1686 to 1690, at the same time as the castle, during the early Baroque period. In the Castell Museum Barn, picture and text panels, together with numerous exhibits, document winegrowing in Castell from earlier times to the modern era. The town of Kitzingen also offers architectural history with traces from different periods. The Falterturm, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built from 1469 to 1496 as a watchtower in the outer town wall. The 39-metre-high Marktturm was part of the inner town wall and served as a watchtower and prison. The town hall on the market square is a significant historic building from the 16th century, built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style. The Alte Mainbrücke, also called the “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. A public town tour takes visitors through the historic centre and across the market square, and explains the town’s history.

Other themes range from culture to activities on the water. At the German Carnival Museum, visitors can explore Fasching, Fastnacht and Karneval in a playful way at numerous interactive stations and in spacious exhibition rooms. The Deusterturm houses an ornithological exhibition. The Kitzingen tasting tour combines samples from local restaurateurs with an exclusive tour of the Deuster cellars by headlamp. The Main at Kitzingen is signposted for canoeists with the “Yellow Wave” and invites visitors to explore by boat; canoes, Canadian canoes and kayaks are also available to rent in Kitzingen. The Kitzingen outdoor pool on Mondsee Island is open for family outings from May to September and has a 50-metre swimming pool, an 80-metre water slide and a diving tower.
