The late-medieval town wall is a good 1,400 metres long. Of the roughly 52 towers that once stood here, 38 can still be seen today; a few more can only just be made out. These figures give the fortifications a tangible scale and make them a distinctive part of Dettelbach’s history. The historic centre lies around the parish church, market square and town hall.

The late-Gothic town hall, with its double-flight external staircase, is considered one of the most beautiful and is the oldest in the district of Kitzingen. Right next to the historic town hall is the “Pilgrims & Pilgrimages” art museum at KUK Dettelbach. It features original works of art and objects and is dedicated to the Diocese of Würzburg’s most important and still thriving Marian pilgrimage. This pilgrimage has shaped life in Dettelbach for more than 500 years.

The churches also tell the story of this tradition. The pilgrimage church “Maria in arena” was built in 1573 and consecrated on 8 September 1613; its origins are linked to the revival of the Dettelbach pilgrimage during the Renaissance. With its two unequal towers, the parish church of St Augustine is a landmark of the town. Its Gothic interior and the winged altarpiece by artist Michael Triegel are among the special sights; the altar forms the spiritual centre. Trails with Different Themes

The Legends and Myths Trail runs for around two kilometres through the vineyards and open countryside around Dettelbach. Twelve panels share myths about Dettelbach and information about the geology of the Main, the development of agriculture and the region’s winegrowing. The trail thus brings together local stories with themes from the landscape and regional history. Its two-kilometre route differs from the 11-kilometre “TraumRunde” Dettelbach circular walk, whose highlight is the Herz-Jesu-Höhe. The different distances can help you choose an activity for the day, without implying a walking time.

The Joseph Kram Poets’ Trail offers a literary perspective. Its 15 stations, featuring Franconian poems, describe the living conditions, ways of thinking and emotions of the rural population in the 19th century. The trail complements the “Pilgervolk” and “Panta Rhei” cultural and art trails. Getting There and a Franconian Specialty

Dettelbach-Bahnhof station is about five kilometres from Dettelbach town. Trains to Würzburg or Nuremberg run hourly; bus connections to the station are limited.
