Hiking, Cliffs and the Jura
The Felsenweg trail runs from Sackdilling through the Felsenlabyrinth rock maze to the Bauernlöcher caves and through a striking rocky landscape. The hike is 2.7 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of around 45 minutes. The Wacholderwanderweg is also among the most beautiful hiking trails in the Amberg-Sulzbach region. The two trails showcase different aspects of hiking: the Felsenweg is defined by its rock formations and the route to the Bauernlöcher, while the Wacholderwanderweg is singled out as a special trail in the region.
Near Wolfertsfeld, you can try traditional archery on the Bow-Vision 3D course. The circular route, around three kilometres long, winds through the farm woodland typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura. The Erzweg offers another way to connect landscape and history: it links sites with a mining tradition spanning more than 1,000 years and passes through cultural and natural landscapes. Regional cave trails are subject to a clear seasonal rule: entering the caves is prohibited from 1 October to 31 March.
The Vils, Wetlands and Birdlife
You can canoe along the Vils from Hahnbach. Along the way, the route passes unspoilt stretches of river, castles and historic Amberg. The river offers a different perspective on the landscape from hiking trails through the Jura and forest.
In Theuern, a nature observation platform stands at the edge of the wastewater treatment plant's polishing ponds. The adjacent wetland, with the Vils, oxbow lakes and ponds, provides year-round resting and breeding grounds for local birds and those migrating from the north. Birdlife is therefore a nature attraction that is not limited to a single season.
Mining History and Living Culture
The East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum at Theuern Cultural Castle researches and documents mining and industry in the East Bavarian region, keeping their history alive. Together with the Erzweg, it highlights the region's long mining tradition from two perspectives: as the focus of a museum and as the theme of a route through cultural and natural landscapes.
Kirwan festivals are also part of the region's culture. Since 2023, they have been listed as intangible cultural heritage in Bavaria. They are celebrated every year in their respective towns and are open to visitors and locals alike. Regional Cuisine and Specialties
Many inns in the Amberg-Sulzbach region regularly host traditional Schlachtschüssel meals. These include Wurschtsuppn (sausage soup) and Kesselfleisch (boiled pork), as well as blood, liver and bratwurst sausages made to the inns' own recipes. Dates vary from one inn to another. Regional brewing traditions include original Upper Palatinate Zoigl beer, brewed in Erlheim. Amberg's Sudhang private brewery uses hops from the world's smallest hop-growing region, in Illschwang.
An unusual landscape attraction is Monte Kaolino near Hirschau: a ski mountain around 120 metres high, without snow, made up of approximately 33 million tonnes of fine quartz sand. It is considered a one-of-a-kind attraction worldwide.
