At the Bow-Vision 3D course near Wolfertsfeld, you can try traditional archery on an approximately 3-kilometre circular route through the farm woodland typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura. If you would rather be on the water, you can canoe along the Vils starting from Hahnbach. The route passes unaltered stretches of river, castles and historic Amberg.

For nature watching, there is the Theuern nature observation platform. It was built on the edge of the settling ponds at the Theuern wastewater treatment plant. The adjoining wetland, with the Vils, its former river channels and ponds, is a year-round resting and breeding ground for local birds and those migrating from the north. The wetland’s year-round character differs from the seasonal church services on Johannisberg.

Culture, Festivals and Regional Cuisine

Kirwan are also part of cultural life in the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land. Since 2023, they have been recognised as intangible cultural heritage in Bavaria. They are celebrated every year in their respective towns and are open to visitors and local residents alike. The East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum at Kultur-Schloss Theuern offers another perspective on the region’s history: it researches and documents mining and industry in eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive.

Traditional Schlachtschüssel is part of the regional food culture. Many inns regularly invite guests to enjoy it; dishes served include Wurschtsuppn, Kesselfleisch, and blood sausages, liver sausages and bratwursts made to their own recipes.
