Circular Trails, Animal Figures and a Cycling Route

The 600 m Hahnenkamm wildlife trail is incorporated into the 3 km Kneipp circular hiking trail in Edelsfeld. Life-size, lifelike figures of native forest animals line the wildlife trail. The Kneipp trail on the Hahnenkamm begins at the five Sebastian Kneipp columns on the sports grounds and follows a circular route of about 3 km. The shorter trail has its own focus within the longer loop: you encounter the animal figures along it, while the Kneipp trail provides the broader route.

The Upper Palatinate Bee Nature Trail offers another trail theme. It is 3 km long and runs from Schönlind to Eberhardsbühl. For a cycling tour, Edelsfeld lies on Route 3 of the Simultankirchen Cycle Route. The 24 km discovery tour begins at the former Simultankirche St. Stephanus on Sulzbacher Straße. This brings together different types of routes: a short trail within a circular hike, an educational trail between two places and a designated cycling tour.

Hollow Ways and Farm History

The Goglhof Open-Air Museum is a three-sided farmstead in the district of Eberhardsbühl, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The old hollow ways can also be located along specific routes: they can be found on the forest path toward Sinnleithen and below the burial mounds on Steinlinger Weg. The hollow ways on Steinlinger Weg run in the direction of Weißenberg.

Six to eight tracks can be identified in the woods along the Steinlinger hollow way as you descend from the Hahnenkamm to Edelsfeld. Between the new sports field and the edge of the village, there are ten to twelve. The two sections therefore differ in the number of tracks described. Together with the directions and waypoints mentioned, they give a concrete sense of how the historic hollow ways fit into the landscape around Edelsfeld.

Amberg-Sulzbach as a Regional Setting

In the broader Amberg-Sulzbach travel destination, the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land lies in Bavaria between Regensburg and Nuremberg. Its landscape features include imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and river valleys. The Felsenweg is a 2.7-kilometre hike from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher; walking time is about 45 minutes. On regional cave hiking trails, entering the caves is prohibited from 1 October to 31 March.

Cycling and cultural routes also give the regional offering its own character. The Simultankirchen Cycle Route connects 49 places of worship in the central and northern Upper Palatinate; ten day tours of varying lengths are available. The Erzweg runs through cultural and natural landscapes and links sites with a mining tradition spanning more than 1,000 years. At Kultur-Schloss Theuern, the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum researches and documents the history of mining and industry in eastern Bavaria.

The Kirwan in the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land are also among the region’s traditions. Since 2023, they have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. They are celebrated each year in their respective localities and are open to visitors and residents alike. Many restaurants in the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land regularly serve traditional Schlachtschüssel: this includes Wurschtsuppn, Kesselfleisch, and blood, liver and bratwurst made according to their own recipes.
