Literature and traces of the city’s history

The town museum documents how Sulzbach was once one of Europe’s largest printing centres for Hebraica. A reconstructed mine tunnel gives visitors a sense of working conditions in mining and ironworking at the time. Those interested in earlier history will find another landmark subject at Sulzbach Castle: from the 8th to the 12th century, it was an important centre of power in the Nordgau and is one of Bavaria’s earliest medieval sites. The first town wall in the Sulzbach district was built around 1300 with four gates. A defensive wall built around 100 years later is still preserved in many places today.

The Sulzbach-Rosenberg Literary Archive offers an insight into German-language literature after 1945, especially the literary scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Letters, proofs, photographs, video recordings and first editions, among other items, are displayed in eight exhibition rooms across two floors. The collection also includes the first draft of Günter Grass’s novel “The Tin Drum” in typescript. Here, literary history meets tangible working materials: you can explore both the development of the literary scene and individual documents and editions.

The Museum Alte Hofapotheke focuses on half a millennium of local pharmaceutical history. On display are everyday objects from earlier generations, both intact and damaged, archaeological discovery windows and historic building fabric. Since 2013, the former synagogue has been used as a municipal place of remembrance and meeting, adding a place of commemoration to the historical themes.

The YSTORION Dragon Trail connects six stops featuring mini audio dramas, which can be accessed via QR codes. The content explores the political, cultural, economic and social history of Sulzbach-Rosenberg. The trail passes through the restored town moat, where historic buildings serve as exhibits, creating a kind of open-air museum. This offers a way to engage with the city’s history beyond a museum exhibition.

The Sulzbach Mining Trail offers two different routes: the northern route leads, among other places, to the Karoline ore mine and the Großenfalz powder magazine. The southern route passes, among other places, over Schlossberg, by the Maxhütte viewpoint and the Villa Max with its mining tunnel. The Max show tunnel is located at Villa Max; visits are possible only by prior arrangement as part of a guided tour. This restriction is important to bear in mind when planning your day if you want to include the show tunnel in your visit.

Town walking routes Nos. 1 to 5 also help you find your way around Sulzbach-Rosenberg. They are marked with black numerals on a yellow background and all start at Luitpoldplatz in the town centre. Anyone interested in local plants will find a school and teaching garden in front of the school museum, with more than 80 labelled plants, shrubs and trees.

Nature and practical information

The “Wüstung Großenfalz” nature reserve lies on the site of the former village of Großenfalz. This species-rich habitat offers rare animals an undisturbed place to live. It provides a contrast to the museums and historic trails, focusing instead on the flora and fauna of a protected natural area.

The Tourist Information Centre in Sulzbach’s old town offers brochures, maps, books and souvenirs. Sulzbach-Rosenberg railway station is a starting point for hikes and is particularly useful for users of the Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN).
