The historic old town of Sulzbach stands high on a steep limestone rock. Karst springs emerge on the southern side of the town hill; they feed the Rosenbach, which flows into the Vils east of Rosenberg.

Culture

The old town of Sulzbach encompasses the largest castle complex in northeastern Bavaria.

The castle grounds feature Carolingian stone buildings and fortifications. These include the castle church, built around 800, parts of which have been preserved in the chapel building of the Upper Castle.

Archaeological masonry sarcophagus graves from the 9th and 10th centuries were discovered next to the castle church.
