The Sainte Marie du Châtenet church in its present form dates back to the 15th century. It consists of a single nave with a flat-ended choir and two side chapels. Particularly distinctive is the octagonal, slate-covered onion dome, topped by a lantern. The parish of Le Châtenet-en-Dognon is believed to have originated in the 11th century.

Dognon, too, tells of a long history of development. The medieval Motte castrale du Dognon consisted of a castle, an outer bailey and a watchtower. The site was built in several phases, initially in wood and later in stone. Archaeological excavations date settlement at the Dognon archaeological site back to the end of the 10th century. The archaeological site in Le Châtenet-en-Dognon, Haute-Vienne, is considered an early castle complex; its existence since that time appears to be documented by a noble family whose name derives from it.

Another chapter in the local history is connected with the Pont du Dognon. The present bridge was built in 1929–1930 to replace its predecessor, which had been flooded during the construction of the Maureix dam.
