Massay has a historical heritage classified as part of the “Cluniac Sites”. The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin in Massay was founded in 738.

Culture

The former Saint-Martin Abbey is protected both as a classified Historic Monument and as a registered Historic Monument. The Saint-Martin Abbey preserves a church dating from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, with stained-glass windows. The chapter house of the former abbey has six ribbed vaults, which rest in the centre on two round columns. It was classified as a Historic Monument by decree of 4 February 1915. The Saint-Loup Chapel dates from the mid-12th century.

The Saint-Martin Abbey can be visited all year round by appointment at the Massay town hall as part of a guided tour.

Nature

The Pelouse de Grand Vau is designated as an “Espace naturel sensible des Départements Cher” and forms part of the Natura 2000 site “Îlots de marais et coteaux calcaires au Nord-Ouest de la Champagne Berrichonne”, SAC No. FR2400531. It is a calcareous, thermophilous dry grassland located along the Herbon stream above a wetland, and is home to a species-rich community of thermophilous plants. The Pelouse de Grand Vau is publicly accessible via a municipal path.

Water and Trails

The municipal body of water Les Pâtureaux de Sailly in Massay is a second-category fishing water. Les Pâtureaux de Sailly is also an association fishing water and is open to members of the 50 AAPPMA associations in the Cher département, as well as the 91 EHGO, CHI and URNE associations. The Les Pâtureaux de Sailly lake covers an area of 5 ha and is 1.5 km long.

The Circuit du Grand Vau is a walking trail in Massay. The hiking route “Loop No. 18 – on the Cluny route” is connected with Massay.
