The Château de La Chapelle-d'Angillon dates back to one of the oldest square keeps in the region, built at the end of the 10th century. The château offers guided tours year-round, including the Musée Alain-Fournier.

Culture and History

The Musée Alain-Fournier presents the writer's life and work through models and photographs. At the Église Saint-Jacques, the rear section of the apse features a 16th-century stained-glass window that is classified as a historic monument. The church itself was built in 1606 by Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully.

A village walking tour leads to the “Maison du Grand Meaulnes”. The former town hall and school building and court of peace was the workplace of Henri's parents from 1903 to 1907. The lavoir in La Chapelle-d'Angillon was built between 1831 and 1869. La Chapelle-d'Angillon is also a stop on the Route Jacques Cœur.

Alain-Fournier's birthplace is privately owned and cannot be visited.

Water and Trails

The terrace of the Château de La Chapelle-d'Angillon overlooks the municipal Plan d'eau des Barres. A 2-kilometre circular path runs around the lake and serves as a fitness trail; visitors can also rent boats there.

The Petite Sauldre flows through La Chapelle-d'Angillon. Fishing permits are available at the Épicerie chapelloise or online. A hiking loop following in Alain-Fournier's footsteps runs along the Sente Verte, a former railway line from Bourges to Sully-sur-Loire. A cultural and historical trail runs along the lake and under the walls of the Château de Béthune to the Grotte Saint-Jacques.

Events

Le Bordé is a lumberjack game for which competitions are held twice a year in La Chapelle-d'Angillon during the warmer months. The competitions take place on the grounds below the Château de La Chapelle-d'Angillon and the lake; two teams of two players each compete against one another using sticks.

Bourges Triathlon announced that the Triathlon du Grand Meaulnes will not take place in 2026.
