In Sancerre, the Tour des Fiefs is a site protected as a historic monument. It is the last surviving remnant of Sancerre’s 14th-century feudal castle and combines this historical connection with a visit to the park and a tasting in the tower’s cellar accompanied by a winemaker.

Culture and History

The Maison des Sancerre is housed in the Maison Farnault, a residence dating from the late Middle Ages. Winemakers from the Sancerre appellation restored the building and developed it into an interpretation centre for the wines of the appellation.

The La Petite Maison de la Culture is also located in the town centre, on the remains of a 10th-century church. Its offerings include exhibitions, the Micro-Folie digital museum, a library, and a cultural and artistic space.

The Visite gourmande de Sancerre is a guided tour through historic buildings and the medieval streets of Sancerre. It ends with a tasting of local products.

Wine and Landscape

The Château de Sancerre is located on the left bank of the Loire and overlooks a unique terroir with four different soil types and 57 hectares of vineyards. The vines are 30 years old on average. The château offers guided tours with commentary, wine tastings, and suitable local specialities.

Beyond the town, the Route des vignobles du Cœur de France runs for 170 kilometres from Sancerre to Châteaumeillant through the wine-growing areas of Centre-Loire, picturesque villages, and characteristic wine cellars.

Walks and Trails

The La Ronde des sorciers hiking trail begins at the Sancerre tourist office on the Esplanade Porte César. A 5.5-kilometre section of the trail runs along the GR31. On the way back, La Ronde des sorciers passes through Sancerre and its medieval streets via Rue Serre-Coeur.
