Mehun-Sur-Yèvre: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mehun-sur-Yèvre combines impressive historical landmarks with a porcelain-making tradition, marked trails and activities on the water. Highlights include the Château Charles VII, the Collégiale Notre-Dame and the Pôle de la porcelaine.

Castle, Church and Porcelain

Four rooms in the tower of the Château Charles VII house a remarkable collection of archaeological objects. These include engravings and reproductions of miniatures that bear witness to the history of the château and everyday life in medieval Mehun-sur-Yèvre. There are 168 steps to climb to the tower. From the top, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view that also includes the Cathédrale Saint-Etienne de Bourges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Collégiale Notre-Dame houses paintings by Eugène Grandin and Jean Boucher, a ceramic Stations of the Cross by André Rozay from La Borne, restored stained-glass windows and contemporary windows installed to mark the transition to the year 2000.

The Pôle de la porcelaine displays significant porcelain collections from Berry, including unique pieces created in the second half of the 19th century by the «La Spéciale» workshop of Manufacture Pillivuyt. It also presents the transformation of kaolin, the finest clay, into a fired and decorated porcelain product in a show featuring light and water.

The Porte de l’Horloge is the surviving gate of Mehun-sur-Yèvre’s second fortification. Before that, the town had the two gates Porte Barbarine and Porte de Bourges; only the latter has survived. In 1853, Charles, the son of the founder of Manufacture Pillivuyt, decided to establish the new factory in Mehun-sur-Yèvre, after the company had initially been based in the municipality of Foëcy. Mehun-sur-Yèvre is also a partner town on the Route Jacques Cœur.

Trails and Water

Two marked hiking routes for hikers and mountain bikers are signposted in the municipality of Mehun-sur-Yèvre. The routes are 12 km and 14.5 km long respectively, can be adapted flexibly and lead to sights in the town and its surroundings, including washhouses and small waterways.

Cyclists, walkers and anglers make use of the banks of the Canal de Berry. On the water, the Canoë Kayak Club Mehunois offers events, introductory courses and river trips.

Market and Local Life

A traditional market takes place every Wednesday morning at the foot of the Château Charles VII.
