Sancergues: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Sancergues combines a river landscape, pilgrimage history and paths through the rural surroundings. The town is located on the Via Lemovicensis, a historic pilgrimage route from Vézelay to Santiago de Compostela. At the same time, the N151 passes through Sancergues and connects Auxerre with Châteauroux via Bourges. The Vauvise also runs through the town; it is 54 km long before flowing into the Loire near Sancerre.

Culture and history

Sancergues is home to the Église Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Cyr, a building protected as a historic monument. The church was placed under monument protection by decree of 24 February 1926. The town of La Charité-sur-Loire, a City of Art and History, is also located near Sancergues. Since 1998, its Notre-Dame church has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an important stop on the Way of St James.

The Université rurale entre Loire et Vauvise offers a wide-ranging cultural programme, including conferences, exhibitions, heritage tours, excursions of discovery, music courses, concerts, and musical and artistic events.

Landscape

Shaped by the bends of the Vauvise, the town centre features a wooded park suitable for walking, picnicking and fishing. Today, the banks of the Vauvise at the Marais de Sancergues offer idyllic walks. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Marais served as communal grazing land before being drained by ditches that connected to the drainage ditches of the medieval town centre.

Route “N°06 – Dans la roue d’Albert Bourlon” passes through the Sancerguois landscape, with marshland, forests and open fields. The Bois d’Augy and the Bois des Usages de Marciau are recommended for mushroom picking and woodland walks; together, they cover 41 hectares.

Trails

Two hikes are mentioned around Sancergues, including the “Les Points” route. The hike to Château de Sarré leads through grain fields and along agricultural tracks.

Route “N°06 – Dans la roue d’Albert Bourlon” follows Albert Bourlon’s training and racing routes and commemorates his 253 km solo breakaway in the 1947 Tour de France.
