Culture

Since 17 September 2003, the Musée Saint-Vic has carried the French designation “Musée de France” within the meaning of the French Heritage Code. In terms of content, it presents human activity in the region from prehistory to the 20th century.

Several buildings are protected as historic monuments under different designations: the Couvent des Capucins is listed in its entirety as a protected historic monument; the listing took place on 8 October 2018. The church of the Couvent des Carmes has been partially listed as a protected historic monument since 12 June 1926. The façades, roofs, and doors of the Hôtel Neyret de la Ravoie have been listed as protected historic features since 19 April 1932. The Eglise Saint-Amand is classified as a protected historic monument in accordance with the 1840 list.

La Maison de l'Equateur is a memorial site dedicated to the history of Jean Godin des Odonnais and Isabel. A permanent exhibition there presents the life stories of some residents of the Hôtel des Odonais, as well as various owners of this house who have shaped its history since the 18th century.

History

The Forteresse de Montrond is the only bastion fortress built in central France. It stands on an isolated limestone hill at the confluence of two rivers and features a botanical educational trail with 20 remarkable trees.

Historic and museum destinations can also be found outside the town, at varying regional distances: the historic site of Abbaye de Noirlac is located in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Amand-Montrond. The historic site of Abbaye Bois-d'Habert, the Musée Charles-Louis-Philippe, and the historic site of Abbaye des Pierres are each located in the wider regional surroundings of Saint-Amand-Montrond.

Nature and water

Lac de Virlay is a 70-hectare natural area used for fishing and walking. The Base nautique de Virlay offers seasonal rentals of electric boats and paddleboards. A walking and cycling trail has been developed along the banks of the Canal de Berry in Saint-Amand-Montrond.

Balnéor has a 25-metre sports pool with four lanes and a depth of 1.20 to 1.80 metres.
