The Menhir dit La Pierre-Longue is a Neolithic monument near La Butte in Cuguen. It has been classified as a monument historique since 1889. The menhir is 6.50 metres high and was Christianised in the 19th century. According to a local legend, the cross at its top prevented the devil from carrying the stone away to build his temple in the heath of Rochefort near Trémeheuc.

Culture and History

The Château de La Roche-Montbourcher was besieged, captured and plundered by Saint-Luc in 1590; in 1595, it was demolished by order. It consisted of a trapezoidal defensive area with a keep, a disappeared seigneurial residence and an eastern bailey surrounded by earthworks with round tower bases at the corners. The site of the Château de La Roche-Montbourcher lies on the edge of a rocky plateau above a narrow, long valley and forms a rocky spur artificially cut off by the excavation of ditches.

The Chapelle de Lantiman is the only surviving chapel of the four chapels that belonged to the parish of Cuguen before the French Revolution. The Croix de La Plihonnière was erected in memory of a family member killed in the First World War.

Trails and Countryside

The Circuit du Menhir de La Butte is a circular trail for discovering Cuguen’s megalithic heritage in the countryside. It is also designated as an easy mountain-biking route and an easy horse-riding route. The sports grounds on the D285 in Cuguen are given as a landmark for the Circuit du Menhir de La Butte.

The pond along the Circuit du Menhir de La Butte provides a habitat for several waterbird species, including mallards, shoveler ducks, wigeons, swans, herons, coots and little egrets.

Garden

The Jardin de La Péfolière is an almost 2-hectare English garden with rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, roses and dogwoods; visits are possible by arrangement.
