The La Croix Verte circular trail starts in Retiers, is 9.5 kilometres long and is classified as an easy hiking trail. It leads around the municipality through the rural landscape; along the way, you can enjoy wide views over the open countryside, discover sunken lanes and explore Retiers’ architectural heritage.

Landscape and Trails

The 24-kilometre, moderately difficult Chêne de la liberté circular trail from Retiers can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. Between the forests of Le Theil-de-Bretagne and La Guerche-de-Bretagne, it passes through the Retiers countryside and follows the Ardenne River, crossing it several times; this creates a varied landscape. The Chêne de la Liberté commemorates the gathering of 3,000 National Guards from the districts of Retiers and La Guerche on 27 June 1790 to reaffirm their federation.

The Circuit Pierre de Richebourg circular trail also combines history and landscape: its historical periods range from the Neolithic to the French Revolution, while sunken lanes and woodland edges provide varied sections of the route. The Crêtes et vallons circular trail offers beautiful views from the heights over Retiers, the forest of Theil-de-Bretagne and the surrounding countryside. Another historical trace, the Chemin des Saulniers, is still recognisable as an ancient route; it was used to transport salt from Guérande to France.

Culture and History

In the parish church of Saint-Pierre, the nave, choir and transept were built in several phases during the 17th century. Retiers’ architectural heritage therefore complements the historical traces found along the paths through the countryside.
