Marcillé-Raoul: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A Romanesque doorway in the cemetery of Marcillé-Raoul probably dates from the 12th century and is the only surviving element of the former church. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1921.

Culture and History

The present-day parish church of Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul dates from 1867 and was built at a different location from the former church. The Archéolab offers an interpretation centre and a discovery trail about the history of the feudal motte of Châtel and its former castle, which belonged to the Barony of Fougères.

Le Châtel is considered the most important and oldest village in the municipality of Marcillé-Raoul. As part of the heritage tours, Le Châtel is presented under the title “Le Châtel, an important legacy of feudalism”. The village of La Fresnais features numerous elements of rural residential architecture from the period of transition between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Trails

The Boucle de la Trinité follows in the footsteps of former pilgrims to several places of worship in Marcillé-Raoul. The Chapelle de la Trinité probably dates from the 17th century, replaced an older building and was restored in the 20th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was a procession destination for processions from Bazouges-la-Pérouse.

The Boucle de la Motte du Châtel starts at Place Théodore Clanchin in Marcillé-Raoul. Les Buttes du Châtel consist of two earth mounds of different heights, 15 m and 8 m high, separated by a 5 m deep ditch. Les Buttes du Châtel are permanently accessible year-round for an individual circular walk. The Boucle de la Motte du Châtel ends with a visit to the medieval historic site of the Motte du Châtel.
