Saint-Méen-le-Grand: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Abbey of Saint-Méen-le-Grand was founded in the 6th century by the hermit Méen. At the Abbey Church of Saint-Méen, Méen’s tomb has been a destination for fervent pilgrimages since the early Middle Ages.

Culture and History

Following an extensive restoration campaign, the Abbey Church of Saint-Méen regained some of its former splendour, along with a collection of Gothic wall paintings. During investigations carried out in 1984 and 1986, very rich wall paintings were discovered in the Chapel of Saint-Vincent; they are dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. In the 17th century, the chapel housed the abbey treasury, including precious reliquaries containing the bones of Saint-Judicaël and Saint-Méen.

The Chapel of Saint-Méen is a pilgrimage chapel built in 1837 on the site of an earlier chapel. Its elongated layout, the bell turret on the façade and the polygonal chancel shape its appearance. Next to the Chapel of Saint-Méen is a holy spring that has been visited by numerous pilgrims for centuries.

The Chapel of Saint-Joseph was built around 1870 and blessed in 1879. It is a memorial commemorating all soldiers who fell in conflicts. Inside are 110 marble plaques bearing the names of soldiers who fell in the First World War.

Walking and Cycling Culture

The “La chapelle Saint-Méen” walking trail begins at the Chapel of Saint-Méen. The “Nature et patrimoine” walking trail passes through parks, by the pond and past the town centre’s heritage sites.

From Saint-Méen, the V6 greenway provides access to 128 kilometres of greenways through inland Brittany, as well as to the Monts d’Arrée, Lac de Guerlédan and the Arthurian sites of Brocéliande.
