Châteaugiron: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Châteaugiron, medieval architectural history and unusual details are found side by side. The Château de Châteaugiron is a listed historic monument and preserves significant remains of a medieval fortress. Part of the town has undergone very few changes and therefore still corresponds to its medieval layout.

Culture

The oldest part of the Château de Châteaugiron is the Romanesque choir of its castle chapel. The Les 3 CHA art centre combines medieval frescoes and a roof structure reminiscent of an upturned boat hull with contemporary works of art created specifically for this location.

The Prieuré Saint-Nicolas preserves the chapel, the chaplain’s accommodation and the reception hall of a hospital founded in the 13th century. The Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is a church built in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century by the architect Aristide Tourneux, who came from Châteaugiron. Its tower bears sculptures of cats on all four corners, created by Arthur Regnault in 1912.

The Lavoir de la Roche is a rectangular washhouse covered on all four sides, with a slate roof and a roof structure resting on staggered wooden posts. For more than two centuries, it was the most important washhouse in the municipality of Châteaugiron. Trade in Châteaugiron flourished and was driven by the production of sailcloth, known as “Noyales”.

Nature

The Étang de Châteaugiron is a peaceful place for walks and offers exceptional views of the château.

La Glaume is a three-hectare wetland in the immediate vicinity of Châteaugiron town centre, providing a habitat for birds, insects and wild-growing plants. On two hectares of La Glaume, sheep of the old Avranchin breed maintain the area as part of an ecological grazing programme.

The Pays de Châteaugiron Tourist Office welcomes visitors all year round, sells tickets for numerous local events and regularly offers activities dedicated to promoting the local heritage. In summer, the Tourist Office organises guided tours of the Château de Châteaugiron; outside the summer season, guided tours for groups and school classes are available by arrangement.
