Holiday apartment in Zástřizly: Traces of fortifications and paths through the Chřiby landscape

Zástřizly brings together diverse traces of history and landscape. The focus is on an unfinished construction project from the 20th century, the history of a former fortification, the Chřiby landscape and paths leading to an unusual stone bridge. This creates a destination with several clearly distinct themes that can be explored on hikes, through historical observation and while travelling through the landscape.

History

The municipality of Zástřizly contains traces of the construction of an unfinished motorway planned during the Second World War. These include three almost completed motorway bridges. The motorway associated with Zástřizly was originally intended to connect Brno and Zlín.

Another historical trace is the former fortification of Zástřizly, which was first mentioned in 1417. It lost its function and probably fell into disrepair in the 17th or 18th century. During construction work at the school in 1899, massive stone foundations and extensive underground spaces were discovered. These were probably remains of the Zástřizly fortification.

Nature

The Chřiby protected area, to which Zástřizly belongs, also includes the cadastral territory of the village and protects, among other things, species-rich beech forests. The Chřiby landscape is highly dissected. Its highest point is the 587-metre-high Brdo.

Paths

A green hiking trail from Zástřizly leads to the stone bridge Stará Cihelka. A regional excursion to this bridge also begins in Zástřizly. A circular hiking trail leads through the Studený žleb valley towards Vlčák and back to Zástřizly. When hiking through the Studený žleb valley, follow the green trail markers to the Nad Studeným žlebem crossroads.

The bridge known today as „Stará Cihelka“ is also called „Kamenný most“ or „Cihlový most“. It is a stone and brick bridge from the late 19th century, located in a wooded valley. Its arch contains a room that served as accommodation for forestry workers in the 1950s.

The route is designated as consisting of 45 percent forest and field roads, 15 percent forest paths and 40 percent asphalt.

Getting there

The centre of Zástřizly is served four times a day. Further bus connections are available at stops on the main road; they are located 500 metres from the village centre.
