Kostelec u Holešova – Church, Nature and Sports

Kostelec u Holešova combines sacred architectural history, archaeological traces, a natural monument and opportunities for physical activity. The Church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1735. During the reconstruction in 1840, it received a new vault, a musicians’ gallery and a sacristy. The church also has a late Baroque organ, which was transferred here in 1833 from a dissolved monastery in Brno. The construction period, renovation and furnishings thus offer several historical perspectives on the same house of worship.

Another historical trace lies in the Kostelecký les forest: Burial Mound Group VII comprises 30 burial mounds, at least 28 of which have been investigated. Cremation burials with extensive ceramic grave goods were discovered. Bronze finds include needles, rings, beads and tubes. The number of burial mounds and the different types of finds show how diverse the archaeological evidence at this site is.

Hrádek is the site of an abandoned medieval fortress approximately 1.4 km northeast of Kostelec u Holešova. This adds another historical setting in the vicinity of the town, differing in period from the church and the prehistoric burial mounds.

Nature and Religious Sites

The Kostelecký les forest is home to the oak known as “Král lesa”, protected as a natural monument in the cadastral area of Kostelec u Holešova. It was declared a memorial tree in 2009. Nature and history come together here in a single named tree.

Svatá studynka is a pilgrimage site by a chapel with a restored spring. Religious ceremonies have been held there for centuries; tourists also use the site for recreation.
