Discover Střížovice: Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Střížovice lies on the right bank of the Morava River, at the transition between the Upper Morava Valley and the Chřiby. The village offers views of the nearby Chřiby mountain range. Its location by the river and at the transition between the lowland and the mountains is complemented by protected natural areas, various trails and small cultural and historical landmarks.

Nature

Bašnov is a protected natural monument in the cadastral area of Střížovice u Kvasic. It lies approximately 0.3 km south-southeast of Střížovice, in a shallow depression in the Morava River floodplain. Bašnov protects the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), a species of European importance, and its habitat. The natural area thus combines a clearly identified landscape feature with the protection of a distinctive amphibian species.

The Střížovice Site of European Community Importance lies approximately 0.7 km southeast of Střížovice, on the left-hand side of the road from Střížovice to Kvasice. It is part of the Natura 2000 network. Its location by the road and its inclusion in this European network of protected areas complement Bašnov’s natural character with another independently designated protected area.

Trails and Cycling

The Trails of the Northern Chřiby network features information boards with maps, historical information and local sights. There are also tourist signposts, viewpoints and benches. The trails are primarily intended for walking; most routes can also be ridden by mountain bike and are suitable for running or Nordic walking.

A 12 km-long hiking trail begins in Střížovice. For cycling, the section between Kroměříž, Střížovice and Kvasice is part of the EuroVelo 9 system. Thus, both a specifically named hiking trail and a regionally designated cycle route are linked to the village, while the Northern Chřiby trail network explicitly accommodates several forms of travel.

Culture

The monument to the citizens of Střížovice who fell in the First World War was erected in 1921 in front of the municipal office. The Kříž na Hrázi adds another religious landmark: it is described as a sandstone cross with a crucifix and a corpus on a pedestal. The body of the martyred Christ and the inscription INRI are depicted on the cross. During the procession through the village, the Hrkači stopped here to pray.

The statue of Saint Florian stands in the village square of Střížovice. It is considered probably a Baroque monument and is 276 cm high overall. As a protected object, the statue is registered in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments under number 34454/7–6157. Thus, different forms of local commemoration and religious representation stand side by side at the municipal office, in the village square and at the Kříž na Hrázi.
