Holiday apartment in Kremsier – palace gardens, culture and nature
The gardens and château of Kroměříž in Kremsier form an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European Baroque princely residence with its gardens. Kroměříž is located at the site of a former ford across the Morava River and at the foot of the Chřiby mountain range.
Culture
The Arcibiskupský zámek was built by the Olomouc archbishops as a summer residence. Its gallery displays works by important European painters from the 15th to the 18th century. The so-called Stará knihovna comprises three halls in which around 88,000 volumes are preserved; it is complemented by a music archive containing more than 6,000 Baroque compositions. The château thus brings architecture, European art and an extensive historical legacy into close connection.
The Muzeum Kroměřížska likewise combines different historical and artistic perspectives. One exhibition is devoted to the decisive events that shaped the development of Kroměříž between 1848 and 1948. In six exhibition halls, you can also familiarise yourself with a cross-section of the work of Max Švabinský, who was born in Kroměříž.
Nature
The Podzámecká zahrada extends across 64 hectares. It includes rare trees from around the world, three ponds, streams and romantic garden areas decorated with sculptures. The Květná zahrada has preserved its historic appearance to this day, adding another historical accent to the garden landscape.
The rotunda of the Květná zahrada contains a Foucault pendulum in its central room. It was installed in 1908 on the initiative of František Nábělek, a secondary-school professor from Kroměříž; its movement demonstrates the rotation of the Earth.
Things to do
The Podzámecká zahrada includes an animal area. Peacocks, swans, ducks and chickens roam freely there. The garden complex is freely accessible all year round. Another destination is the summit of Barbořina, which offers impressive views of Haná, the Hostýnské vrchy and, in particular, the city of Kroměříž.
The approximately 1 km-long Naučná stezka veverky Čiperky educational trail teaches children interesting facts about life in the forest, including the animals that live there and their food. The Šlajza area includes a 1.5-kilometre running loop. The Šlajza recreation area also offers shelters, two fire pits for roasting sausages, benches and bicycle racks.
