In Šumice, local history, traditional architectural styles and protected landscapes can be encountered in many different forms.

Culture

The Šumice Museum contains around 420 collected museum objects, presented in three thematically arranged rooms: one room designed like a traditional living room, an exhibition of traditional costumes, and a room dedicated to agriculture and crafts. The current exhibition at the Šumice Museum explores the lives of Šumice’s inhabitants, their traditional costumes, crafts and leisure activities. The museum is housed in the attic of a historic municipal building dating from the 1930s.

The past is also visible in specific buildings outside the museum. Pipalův mlýn is an important technical monument and is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. It preserves almost completely intact machinery and technical equipment, as well as artefacts from the lives of millers in the first half of the 20th century. The Trchalíkova usedlost comprises a historic barn, a dowry house and a carriage shed; the complex has been preserved as an immovable cultural monument. It also includes a still-functioning horse-powered sweep for driving agricultural machinery and a functioning replica of a fruit-drying barn.

Further historical traces can be found in Hasoňova chalupa, a preserved smallholder’s or small farmer’s house with ceiling beams dated to 1839, and in Šerkova usedlost, one of the oldest buildings in Šumice, whose history has been documented since 1777. During the Šumice hody celebrations, the fruit ripens; in Šumice, povidla were made and fruit was dried. The Šumice hody now last one day, take place on the second Sunday in September and are known in the surrounding area as “dřinkové hody”.

Nature

The Ovčírka area lies on the northern edge of Šumice. It is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Údolí Bánovského potoka area includes the cadastral territory of Šumice u Uherského Brodu. The most valuable part of this area consists of a xerothermic meadow with individual pear trees and a strip of blackthorn shrubs.

Trails and leisure

The Putování po šumických pověstech route offers a viewpoint overlooking Šumice, Nezdenice and the 384-metre-high Babí hůrka hill. The section to Nivky is considered manageable for parents with small children and for seniors. A marked route also begins at Šumice railway station. A cycle path built a few years ago leads to Šumice.

Water is also among the local leisure options: three ponds in Šumice are used for sport fishing. The railway line between Veselí nad Moravou and the Vlárský průsmyk passes through Šumice.
