Ostrožská Lhota is a place where local history, rural material culture, religious buildings, customs and paths through the landscape come together at specific points of interest. These different facets are reflected not only in historical dates, but also in museums and festivals.

Culture and History

The first written record of Ostrožská Lhota dates from 1371. At that time, the place was referred to by the Latin name Majori Lhota. The Archaeological Museum Ostrožská Lhota offers an engaging introduction to the various historical periods. It displays finds dating from the Stone Age to modern times, replicas of prehistoric vessels, a model of the settlement in 1827, Bronze Age jewellery and pruning knives.

The museum also offers archaeological excursions for groups and schools under the direction of archaeologist Mgr. Tomáš Zeman, Ph.D. The Lidové muzeum in the Lidový domek Háječek at house no. 143 provides a different perspective on the region’s past. Visits take place from the end of April to the end of September on Sundays from 14:00 to 17:00; by prior arrangement, visits are possible year-round.

Museums and Rural Material Culture

The Lidový domek Háječek comprises a historic kitchen and living rooms furnished with period equipment. On display are wooden furniture, butter-making tools, religious images and children’s toys more than 100 years old. In addition, the municipal museum, with its archaeological finds, is open from April to October on Sundays from 13:00 to 18:00.

Religious Heritage

Among the notable religious buildings is Svatý Antonínek, an important Roman Catholic Baroque pilgrimage chapel dating from the 17th century. It stands on Antonínský kopec between Ostrožská Lhota and Blatnice pod Svatým Antonínkem. In the village itself, the Church of St. James the Greater was built in 1908 in the Late Baroque style. At an intersection in the centre of Ostrožská Lhota, there is also a stone statue of Saint John the Baptist dating from 1747.

Hiking and Pilgrimage

A hike can begin at the car park by the municipal office in Ostrožská Lhota. It passes the Church of St. James the Greater and then continues through the fields outside the village. A 5 km hike from Ostrožská Lhota leads to the Svatý Antonínek pilgrimage site. This provides both a route through the local surroundings and a connection to a traditional religious destination in and around the village.

Nature and Cycling Routes

Ostrožská Lhota lies on the edge of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The Okluky stream flows through the village and belongs to the Morava River basin. Two important wine cycling routes cross in Ostrožská Lhota: the Uherskohradišťská and Strážnická cycling routes.

Festivals and Local Customs

The festival calendar also preserves various traditions. Ženáčské hody has been held in Ostrožská Lhota every two years in even-numbered years since 2006. Slovácké hody s právem, on the other hand, takes place every odd-numbered year and was first held there in 1956. In one documented edition, it was celebrated for the 29th time.
