A pilgrimage takes place every year on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Mass is celebrated in the church on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

Culture and History

The present-day Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Skála was built in 1728 to replace an earlier wooden chapel. A stone staircase was built in front of the church in 1864. A tower with bevelled corners stands in front of its western façade; the year 1728 is inscribed above the façade.

The vicarage in Skála dates from 1787. On the slope below the church stands a monument to the soldiers who fell in the First World War, unveiled on 9 June 1930. Behind the church is a former cemetery; at its far end, aligned with the axis of the church, stands a mortuary chapel.

The interior and exterior form of the church is also remarkable: externally, the nave is rectangular, while internally it is oval, with niches on the transverse and diagonal axes. The Baroque high altar dates from around 1740 and features twisted columns and four statues of angels venerating the Virgin Mary. The church also contains a Rococo pulpit and Stations of the Cross by J. Vysekal dating from 1883. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has been a protected monument since 1958.

Landscape and Nature

Skála lies in a valley below a rocky outcrop on the Perlový stream. Storks have regularly nested since 1954 on a 30-metre-high chimney at the distillery.
