Jilem’s written history dates back to 1318: in the earliest written record, Martin of Jilem is mentioned as living there.

Culture and History

The first written mention of Jilemská tvrz dates from 1536. At that time, Jilemská tvrz stood between the present-day Nohavka and Židovná ponds, which provided it with a certain degree of protection. After the First World War, the site of the former Jilemská tvrz was levelled; rusty iron, horseshoes and remains of walls were found in the process. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is located in Jilem, in the cadastral area of Jilem u Sedletína.

Landscape

Most of Jilem’s cadastral area is drained via the Jiříkovský potok into the Sázavka and onward into the Sázava. Beneath the topsoil in Jilem lies gneiss covered by clay; in areas exposed to the wind, the gneiss is covered with sand and a thin layer of topsoil. After the retreat of the last Ice Age, mixed forests with conifers, birches, elms and beeches grew in Jilem around 10,000 years ago; alders settled along the waterways.

The 226-kilometre, red-marked Maříž–Golčův Jeníkov bridleway passes through Jilem. The ruins of Orlík are located in the wider region around Jilem. Mount Vysoká is also located in the wider region around Jilem. The hills Lysá N [Horní Krupá u Havlíčkova Brodu], Lysá [Horní Krupá u Havlíčkova Brodu] and Čachotín [Chotěboř] are located in the immediate vicinity of Jilem.
