Číhošť: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Číhošť is a single-nave Gothic building with a five-sided enclosed presbytery and a sacristy on the north side. It is mentioned in records as early as 1350 and features distinctive ear-of-grain masonry on its exterior facade.

History and remembrance

During the event known as the “Číhošť miracle,” the cross located on the tabernacle moved several times during a Mass sermon on 11 December 1949. The Josef Toufar exhibition in the Číhošť parish house opened on 11 December 2014.

Josef Toufar’s grave is located in front of the altar, beneath a stone slab in the floor on the main axis of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Ecce Homo monument by sculptor Roman Podrázský, commemorating Josef Toufar, was unveiled on 22 September 1990.

Visiting the site

The exhibition about Josef Toufar and tours of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary can be visited by prior arrangement, usually after a church service or at another agreed time. The Hasičské muzeum SDH in Číhošť can be visited at any time by telephone appointment.

Číhošť is the main attraction of the 23rd stage of the Centrální stezka between Ledeč nad Sázavou and Golčův Jeníkov; the geometric centre of the Czech Republic is located there. It can be reached by bicycle, on foot or by motorcycle.
