Vlkanov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Near Vlkanov, the Stvořidla Nature Reserve is located on the Sázava River between Světlá nad Sázavou and Ledeč nad Sázavou. The protected section includes a fast-flowing stretch of river, a rocky riverbed and a geomorphologically distinctive breakthrough valley landscape, making it a popular destination for canoeists.

Geographical Setting

Číhošť is located 2 km west of Vlkanov, in the immediate vicinity. It is home to the geometric centre of the Czech Republic, marked by a stone monument featuring a map of the country. Also nearby is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Číhošť, which is associated with the so-called Číhošť Miracle.

Nature and Cycling Routes

Vlkanov lies at the junction of Road III/34731 between Číhošť and Světlá nad Sázavou and Road III/34734 between Vlkanov and Sázavka. A marked cycle route runs through the Vlkanov area along both Class III roads. The Posázavskou cestou cycle route reaches Vlkanov as its final village before descending to Ledeč nad Sázavou.

In the northeastern part of the Vlkanov municipal area, Louka u Vlkanova is registered as a valuable landscape feature, VKP No. 74. The occurrence of Pedicularis sylvatica has also been recorded at Louka u Vlkanova.

History and Culture

The history of Vlkanov dates back to 1591. In 1919, the inhabitants erected a monument in the village square to five fellow citizens who had fallen in the First World War. A school was built in Vlkanov in 1830. It initially had one class and was later expanded to two classes; a third branch was located in Opatovice.

The former school building now serves as a recreational facility for a pioneer group from Prague, which also rents it to other interested parties for recreation. Josef Zadina was born in Vlkanov in 1887 and was a member of parliament and minister of Czechoslovakia in the 1930s.
