Velké Žernoseky: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Velké Žernoseky reveals its distinctive character especially where viticulture and history are directly intertwined. Beneath the chateau are wine cellars whose fabric dates back at least to the 13th century. The chateau itself is an early Baroque chateau built for wine production and expanded at the end of the 18th century.

Viticulture and the Chateau

Žernosecké vinařství offers wine tastings in Velké Žernoseky in the cellars, the salon, or the chateau’s great hall. The vineyard sites also bear their historical names: Kostelní, Mariánská, Malá Vendule and Velká Vendule.

The viticultural complex also includes the Viničné domky. The group consists of four vineyard houses on terraces on the southwestern slope of Malá Vendule and forms part of the viticultural complex of Velké Žernoseky. At the same time, it forms a typical landscape landmark; its core is probably Baroque.

Landscape at Česká brána

The rocky promontory of Kalvárie, with three wooden crosses on its summit, forms a striking landscape landmark of Česká brána. Kalvárie can be reached without access restrictions; by car, the site can be reached to within 250 metres.

Church and Tradition

The Gothic Church of St Nicholas in Velké Žernoseky was rebuilt in the 16th century and is a striking landscape landmark. Its single-nave body has a net vault, the chancel has a three-sided apse, and a sacristy is attached on the north side. The church tower dates from the 14th century and was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1881.

Another historical tradition is associated with the chapel on Hrádek: since 1818, the Hrádeker Festival has been celebrated there with Pentecost services.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

An excursion from Velké Žernoseky follows a green-marked hiking trail through the vineyards to Kalvárie, also known as Tříkřížový vrch. On an excursion from Velké Žernoseky, you can also watch a ferry carrying passengers across the Elbe.

For cyclists, the Elbe Trail runs from Litoměřice to Velké Žernoseky and onward to Ústí nad Labem. Most of the route follows separate cycle paths or roads closed to motorised traffic.
