Budyně nad Ohří takes you through a dense succession of historic buildings and collections. The Vodní hrad Budyně nad Ohří, a medieval water castle, houses the Janda Museum. It features an alchemical workshop and laboratory in rooms where alchemical experiments were conducted in the 16th century. During your visit, you can also follow a tour route through the castle’s interior. At Vodní hrad, you can also see a preserved Nile crocodile that was brought to the Budyně estate at the beginning of the 16th century.

Culture and History

The restored synagogue in Budyně nad Ohří now serves as a cultural centre for exhibitions, lectures and concerts. It was built in 1786–1787 in the Rococo style with Neoclassical influences after the former synagogue was destroyed in a major fire in 1783.

The lapidarium is a permanent outdoor exhibition of the Budyně nad Ohří City Gallery. It presents a collection of stone sculptures that form part of the cultural heritage of Budyně nad Ohří and offers visitors an outdoor place where they can view historical artefacts.

The St Wenceslas Church is medieval in origin and a prominent building on the main square of Budyně nad Ohří. Its west façade, decorated with sculptures, and its imposing square tower define its appearance. The grounds of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows include a Baroque ossuary chapel; the church itself is a prominent sacred building and a distinctive landmark in the landscape. This historic setting is complemented by a protected two-arch sandstone bridge built between 1770 and 1773. Budyně nad Ohří also has an urban heritage conservation zone.

Landscape and Trails

The Naučná stezka Malá Ohře is an approximately 3-kilometre educational trail with six information boards. It follows the Malá Ohře to its confluence with the Ohře and to the place known as Špička. Along the way, the trail introduces visitors to the natural beauty, history and present-day character of the Budyňsko area.

Cycle Route 6 also passes through Budyně nad Ohří. It runs through the town between Kostelec nad Ohří and Doksany.

Events

The grounds of Vodní hrad Budyně nad Ohří host Budyňský poutník, a recurring folk music event. Budyňský poutník is also associated with a traditional pilgrimage in Budyně, whose origins there date back to the 16th century.
