Culture and History

St. Wenceslas Church in Bechlín has been mentioned as an Early Gothic parish church since 1259. The protected ensemble comprises the church building, the bell tower, the cemetery boundary wall, and the associated plots no. 499, 500, and 501.

The bell tower is a free-standing, two-storey rectangular building at the edge of a raised terrain terrace. Another historical feature is Villa Augusta Švagrovský: the pseudo-Renaissance building with a half-timbered upper floor was constructed in the Swiss style in 1874–1875. The writer Jan Neruda frequently stayed there; the poetry collection “Písně kosmické” was created in the villa.

Moving Scenes

The “Podřípský betlém” is a moving exhibition covering an area of 8 × 2 metres and featuring around 500 figures made of corn husks. “Příběh bechlínských broučků” is also one of the moving scenes. The display measures 3 × 1 metre and is accompanied by a performance lasting approximately 20 minutes.

Landscape and Surroundings

The sandy fields towards Hněvice and Předonín, including the area known as “Dílce”, are planted with fruit trees.

Four mountains are located around Bechlín: Sovice, Hořice, Vidrholec, and Hořidla. Zámek Ostrov, a chateau, is also located in the surrounding area. Svatý Jiří, a church, is situated nearby.
