Volary: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Volary lies at an altitude of 760 m in a basin characterized by meadows, plains and forests, between the thousand-metre-high mountains of the Bohemian Forest. The town is located in the Šumava Protected Landscape Area and on the border of Šumava National Park.

Landscape and Trails

The local route “Alejí na vyhlídku” is 4 km long and has an elevation difference of 110 m. It offers views of the Volary basin and the border mountains. The route “Lukami pod Bobíkem a Jedlovou horou” leads to historic wooden hay barns and offers the opportunity to see a former drying facility for cattle hides.

The public network of running and Nordic walking routes in Volary includes the 3.5 km circular route “Menhiry”. The running route network in Volary is 32 km long in total. The running and walking routes in Volary pass through the Šumava Protected Landscape Area.

Architecture, Culture and Remembrance

The old town of Volary, with its log-house architecture, is an urban heritage reserve. In the northern part of Volary, numerous preserved log and half-timbered houses in the Alpine style stand along the stream. The route “Alpská architektura ve Volarech” leads through the town and offers insights into historic houses in the Alpine style. The Church of St Catherine is an early Baroque landmark on Volary’s square.

The Volarské muzeum is located in one of Volary’s historic log houses. The permanent exhibitions are dedicated to “Pochod smrti”, “Staré Volary ve fotografii”, “Zlatá stezka”, “Střípky z historie” and “Křížové cesty”.

The memorial to the victims of the death march in Volary commemorates 95 Jewish women who died there on 4 May 1945 while travelling from the Ravensbrück and Helmbrechts concentration camps. The Stations of the Cross at the foot of Kamenáč fell into disrepair after 1945 but was restored in 2008.

Events

At the Volarské slavnosti dřeva, several dozen craftspeople demonstrate old, partly almost forgotten crafts every year. The Volarské slavnosti dřeva also includes a traditional wooden-shoe march. Noc kostelů is an annual public event during which churches and other ecclesiastical spaces are opened in the evening and at night for guided tours, concerts and meetings.
