History and Traditions

Vlachovo Březí was granted market-town status in 1538 and city status in 1868. The town was also designated a heritage conservation zone. Every year around the transition from May to June, the large Svatodušní pouť pilgrimage takes place here.

Culture and Architecture

The Jewish Cemetery in Vlachovo Březí contains around 200 gravestones; the oldest dates from 1729. The cemetery is freely accessible. The Panský pivovar brewery was founded around 1670 and operated until 1924.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Vlachovo Březí dates from the mid-17th century and was built by Karel Leopold, Count of Millesimo. The pilgrimage chapel of sv. Ducha contains fourteen relief-style wooden carvings of the Stations of the Cross. The Way of the Cross to the pilgrimage site of sv. Ducha leads uphill and includes a Calvary group and fourteen chapels.

The former forge “Bývalá kovárna” in Vlachovo Březí is a residential and agricultural building. Its southern gable features volute wings and stucco decoration typical of Jakub Bursa.

At Vlachovo Březí Castle, the ground floor contains original stone masonry two metres thick and Romanesque barrel vaults; on the first floor, Baroque-style stucco ceilings have been preserved. The castle is currently unused and not open to the public.

Nature and Excursions

The mountains in the wider surroundings of Vlachovo Březí include Volovický vrch, Včelenský vrch, Libín and Boubín. In the nearby natural swimming pool on the road to Libotyně, you can cool off during the summer months.
