Opařany combines Baroque monastery history with notable buildings and a park open to the public. Building A, the former Jesuit monastery, was constructed between 1717 and 1727 on the site of a former stone fortress. The Baroque monastery gate, Markéta, is named after the fresco of Saint Margaret in its gable.

Culture

Other historic buildings include the water tower, built in 1901. The Church of Saint Francis Xavier was built between 1732 and 1735 on the site of an earlier church dating from the mid-17th century; its high altar contains a painting of the Black Madonna.

Immediately next to the Church of Saint Wenceslas in Opařany stands the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, which is itself protected as a cultural monument. The free-standing niche chapel stands in front of the southern façade of a church and has a square floor plan with a shallow three-sided apse. It is built of mixed masonry, has a curved gable, and a roof covered with tiles laid in two layers. The interior of the niche chapel is square and covered by a ribbed cross vault.

Guided tours of the former Jesuit monastery’s interiors include the cloister, the Baroque refectory, museum rooms, and the church’s oratories. Building A also houses a permanent exhibition of historical documents and objects relating to the history of psychiatry in Opařany.

Nature

The DPN Opařany park is protected as a cultural monument and is open to the public daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A dendrological educational trail with labels on rarer trees runs through the park.

From Opařany, a paved forest path leads to Jezuitský vrch and the image of the Black Madonna. The path was once used by Jesuits who prepared for their work as preachers and missionaries at the Opařany monastery.

Public Facilities

The Bistro community centre in Opařany offers workshops and other activities to the general public, including meetings, lectures, gymnastics, and board games. DPN Opařany also offers tourist accommodation in a property with 21 apartments.

During the guided tours held as part of European Heritage Days, the water tower could only be visited with a guide and only from the outside; therefore, these tours offered only an exterior view.
