Biskupice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Directly above Biskupice lies the prehistoric Hrubé kolo hillfort, an elongated ellipse measuring 80 by 90 metres and surrounded by a ditch. A blue-marked hiking route connects the Calvary of Jaroměřice with the ruins of Plankenberk Castle, leads to the site of the Hrubé kolo hillfort and continues to Biskupice; the hiking report gives the distance to Biskupice as 7.9 km. Today, only minor wall remnants remain of Plankenberk Castle.

Culture and History

The château in Biskupice was built between 1713 and 1716 on the site of an older fortification that had previously fallen into disrepair. The former fortification also included the estate brewery, which brewed beer until 1870. The late Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul replaced an older church and was consecrated in September 1776. Inside, it has four altars containing relics of saints, including John of Nepomuk and Wenceslaus.

Further historic landmarks can be found in the village centre: the restored statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the village square near the fire station. The statue of Saint Florian dates from around 1726. Beside the Biskupice municipal office stands a monument approximately six metres high commemorating the victims of the First World War. Four plaques list the names of those who fell and those who died as a result of their injuries; in its upper section, the monument depicts a male figure symbolising the struggle for freedom.
