Mladeč is particularly characterized by the Mladeč Caves. The caves combine a distinctive karst landscape with significant paleontological and archaeological traces and are also located in an area with historic landmarks.
Culture and Archaeology
The Mladeč Caves are an important paleontological and archaeological site. Finds include bones of Pleistocene vertebrates, human remains from the Paleolithic, stone tools, and fireplaces.
The Mladeč–Třesín archaeological site preserves evidence of settlements from the Eneolithic, Bronze Age, La Tène period, and Early Middle Ages. Čertův most, a stone arch, is located along the Třesín educational trail. The Rytířská síň, a building with sixteen ancient columns, was also located there; today, only one column remains. Mladeč is also home to the Chapel of St. Florian and St. Barbara, which was built in 2003 and has a square bell tower with a bell.
Karst and Caves
The Třesín National Nature Monument was established to protect the karst caves near Mladeč. The Mladeč Caves are located in the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area and were formed in the limestone hill of Třesín.
The Mladeč Caves comprise a total of 1,250 meters of passages and chambers with an elevation difference of 30 meters. The visitor route through the caves is 380 meters long, includes a small archaeological exhibition, and takes about 40 minutes.
The cave system also includes Podkova Cave. It is about 50 meters long and was formed when two originally separate passages became connected. During the winter bat hibernation period, Podkova is closed and becomes accessible again in spring.
Educational Trail and Paths
The Třesín educational trail begins in Mladeč village square, passes by the Mladeč Caves, and runs around the karst hill of Třesín. The approximately 5-kilometer circular route initially follows a red-marked hiking trail and then a blue-marked one.
The educational trail runs mostly along forest paths and passes geological formations as well as the remains of structures built by the Lichtensteins. Red- and blue-marked hiking trails run through Mladeč; a marked local cycling route also passes through the village.
Getting There and Orientation
The visitor facility for the Mladeč Caves is located at Mladeč 84, 783 21 Chudobín u Litovle; the GPS coordinates are 49°42′23″N, 17°00′57″E. On railway line 308 between Litovel and Mladeč, there is a stop called Mladeč jeskyně.
The Mladeč Caves can be reached via exit 245 of the D35 motorway. Parking is available on a parking strip or in Mladeč village square.
