The Battle of Hradec Králové is also known as the Battle of Sadová or the Battle of Chlum.

History and remembrance

The group of monuments commemorating the 1866 war in Sadová comprises twelve monuments and memorial plaques. These include a central monument, a monument marking a mass grave, memorial monuments, crosses, and plaques. The military cemetery in Sadová was established for people who died in local wartime hospitals. The cemetery also contains the grave of Hermann von Pannewitz, a Prussian lieutenant colonel of the 3rd Guard Grenadier Regiment.

Sadová is also associated with Václav Jiří Smetana, the grandfather of Bedřich Smetana. He was born in Sadová on 17 January 1730.

Location and landscape

Sadová lies in the valley of the Bystřice River. The village stretches along both sides of the E442 road and the Hradec Králové–Jičín railway line.

Nearby are Svíb Hill [Máslojedy], (Na příbytkách) Hill [Všestary-Lípa], and Sobětušský bor Hill [Nechanice-Sobětuš]. In the wider regional surroundings of Sadová lies Mount Maxinec (MLázovický chlum). The Church of Svatý Jiří is also located there.
