Skalice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Skalice lies in a valley on both banks of the Skalický potok. The village combines an early settlement history with archaeological traces, historic paths and distinctive details in its townscape.

History

Archaeological finds prove that the area around Skalice was already settled during the Early Hillfort Period. The Pardědub archaeological site is located in the municipality of Skalice, in the cadastral areas of Skalice u Smiřic and Skalička nad Labem, and is classified as a hilltop settlement and fortification. Pardědub is also situated on a rise above the left bank of the Elbe. A remnant of the prehistoric fortification, consisting of a ditch and rampart preserved as a raised feature in the terrain, remains in the northeastern part.

The first written mention of Skalice dates from 1143. At that time, Bishop Jan of Lochenice donated the district referred to as Skalice to the Strahov Premonstratensian Monastery in Prague. A fortress was also built in Skalice. Its inhabitants had to guard the route from Hradec via Skalice to Smiřice, as well as a ford across the Elbe crossed by this route.

Landscape and Trails

The marked cycle route No. 4283 runs from Smržov via Skalice to Lochenice. A marked red Way of St. James hiking route runs along the Elbe.

Townscape

In front of House No. 13 in Skalice stands a stone crucifix with a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche and an enclosure. Next to it is a bell tower with a concrete structure.

The historic village square in the western part of Skalice is part of the local historical and cultural heritage. In the field near Dolní bahna, on the path from Skalice to Smiřice, stands an elongated stone with two carved crosses. Beneath them are two broad axes depicted with their blades facing one another; the stone also bears an illegible inscription.

Culture

In the municipality of Skalice, the Church of St. Wenceslas complex in Číbuz, including its enclosing wall, as well as Farm No. 24 in Skalička, are listed cultural monuments. The municipality’s annual cultural events include the Pivní slavnosti Skalice beer festival.
