Libčany: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Libčany combines a significant historic monument with a multifaceted local history and several characteristic ponds. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was founded in the Romanesque style at the beginning of the 13th century and rebuilt around the turn of the 16th century. It is an important historic monument in Libčany.

Culture and History

Skeleton graves of the Únětice culture provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in the landscape around Libčany. The later seats of power are also part of the village’s history: the Turyně fortress once stood on an island in a pond in the centre of Libčany and served as the seat of the Lords of Libčany. A second fortress was built on the site where Libčany Castle later stood; today, the primary school is located there.

The fortress fell into ruin around the middle of the 16th century. Later, a single-storey Renaissance castle was built in its place.

Water and Nature

The bodies of water in Libčany include Brigádník Pond, which, with an area of 4,000 m², is the largest of Libčany’s ponds, and Turyň Pond on private property, which is not open to the public. Kočár Pond, also known as the outdoor swimming pool, covers approximately 3,300 m² and is located near the centre of Libčany.

The educational trail “Cesta do minulosti Libčan a Hvozdnic” begins at Kočár Pond. When there is sufficient frost, the pond is used by skaters of all generations and skill levels. The pond in Tovární Park is mainly used for recreation and has a wooden footbridge over the water.

In the forest between Libčany and Hřibsko lies Libušina studánka, a spring associated with a local tradition concerning water with healing properties.

Local Life

The regular draining of Kočár Pond includes the sale of fish and fish specialities. The Spolek Brigádník association organises traditional fish harvests in Libčany. The 50th anniversary of the puppet theatre show “O cenu Matěje Kopeckého” was also celebrated in Libčany.
