Žďár Nad Metují: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Žďár nad Metují, Hrad Vlčinec is a significant archaeological site and a ruined High Medieval castle complex; remains of walls as well as ramparts and ditches are visible. The named mountain Ostaš lies in the nearby area; on its southern slope is the abundant Samaritánka spring with a historic sandstone relief.

Landscape and Springs

Samaritánka was used for Žďár nad Metují’s first water supply; the water pipeline was completed and consecrated on 3 August 1856. The water can be tasted at an overflow along a forest path below the water reservoir near Samaritánka; however, the overflow may be very slight during dry seasons.

The named mountains Supí Hnízdo, Špičák and Velká kupa are also located in the vicinity of Žďár nad Metují.

History and Culture

After indulgences for pilgrims were obtained in 1515, processions to the Chapel of the Holy Cross took place several times a year on Ostaš. During the period of religious suppression, secret gatherings of followers of Utraquism were held in the Sluj Českých bratří. The present-day Chapel of the Holy Cross on Ostaš was consecrated in 1859 and has survived to the present day.

The Museum of Agricultural and Firefighting Technology is located in Žďár nad Metují in the former agricultural building No. 223 on the main cycle route 4003. This cycle route leads from Žďár nad Metují railway station to Ostaš. The museum displays a combined motorized horse-drawn fire engine made by R. Herold, with an engine by Laurin & Klement from 1924.
