Červená Hora: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The ruins of Červená Hora Castle lie about 1 kilometre west of the village on a rocky hill above the Úpa River.

Culture and History

Červená Hora Castle was built between 1253 and 1278 on a hill of red sandstone. In 1427, it was destroyed by the Hussites and never rebuilt. Together with Vízmburk and Rýzmburk, the castle was part of three fortified strongholds at important crossroads of the Glatzer-Polish and Úpa trade routes.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary with a small bell tower was built in 1870. A cross dating from 1908 stands nearby. The chapel itself is a cultural monument with a four-sided masonry base, a truncated pyramidal roof covered with shingles, a lantern, an onion dome and a cross.

Červená Hora is also associated with literature: the village is the birthplace of Viktorie Židová, who inspired the character of Viktorka in Božena Němcová’s “The Grandmother”. In addition, part of the plot of Alois Jirásek’s chronicle “U nás” is connected with Červená Hora.

Nature and Landscape

Part of the Babiččino údolí National Nature Monument lies within the cadastral area of Červená Hora. The Babiččino údolí National Nature Monument in the Červená Hora planning area includes the valley of the Úpa River, meadows in its floodplain, and mixed forests on the adjacent slopes with rock outcrops.

The Žebrácká rokle gorge lies about 400 metres north of Červená Hora. The wider regional surroundings of Červená Hora include Čáp Mountain, Ostaš Mountain, Lelkowa Góra Mountain and Krucza Kopa Mountain. Lázně Church is also located there.

Paths and Routes

The Justynčina stezka trail passes through Červená Hora and is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The 35-kilometre “In the Footsteps of the Battles of the 1866 War” route also passes through Červená Hora.
