Culture and History

Finds of cremation graves near the municipal forest of Hořejany are considered evidence that Hořejany was inhabited in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Finds from the burial site of Hořejany include fragments of bronze jewellery, iron tools and shears for shearing sheep’s wool.

In 1331, Ostrov Monastery leased five lán of land in Hořejany to local settlers under emphyteutic law, also known as German law. The emphyteutic inhabitants of Hořejany performed corvée labour for the Princes of Schwarzenberg until 1848.
