Krásná Hora nad Vltavou reveals itself through a dense juxtaposition of urban history, places of remembrance and paths leading into the landscape. The town hall clock tower, Radnice, creates a distinctive landmark on the square. The Church of St Nicholas, Kostel Svatého Mikuláše, already stood in Krásná Hora nad Vltavou before 1350.

Culture and History

An unusual testimony to the past is the Kamenný korec: a round, bowl-shaped measure set on a square stone pedestal with a small opening on the side. The pedestal is younger than the bowl and bears the year 1822. The historic townscape also includes the Baroque, rounded column Mariánský sloup, with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary; it was erected around 1772.

The monument Památník padlým stands between the church and the school and commemorates those who fell in the First World War. The monument Památník letců commemorates three pilots who died in accidents. On 5 September 1929, an observation aircraft and a fighter aircraft collided near Přední Chlum during a military exercise.

The town's older history is also linked to mining: on 11 January 1351, Charles IV confirmed Krásná Hora's privileges as a royal mining town. The gold found there was used together with gold from Knín and Jílové to mint gold coins. Biographical connections include the ancestors of the poet Karel Hynek Mácha, who lived in Krásná Hora, as well as Ema Destinová, who visited the inn "U dvou čápů" here.

The former fortress Tvrz had a Baroque core, was built in 1554 and later converted into a granary; as a former fortress, it has been protected as a historic monument since 1991.

Landscape and Paths

A prominent point outside the town is the Viklan Vindiš balancing boulder. The path there passes by the Obecňák pond; it then follows the yellow hiking trail marking along a forest path to the boulder. Viklan Vindiš lies one kilometre from the town above the valley of the Pivoňka stream, south of the summit of Na Krámcích (449 m above sea level). A sign at the boulder provides information about local history as well as native fauna and flora.

The Lesní svět educational trail, also known as the Vletická naučná stezka, runs near the settlement of Vletice by Krásná Hora nad Vltavou.
