Stara Hut': Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Stará Huť lies at the foot of the Brdy Mountains on the Kocába stream. The town's industrial heritage is connected with the settlement's most likely founding in 1674, as well as with iron ore from the Brdy Mountains, wood from the forests and suitable water resources.

History and culture

Water from the outflow of the Strž pond and from the Kocába River was used to gradually build a system of four hammer mills, where pig iron was processed into usable wrought iron. The first iron rolling mill in Bohemia and in the whole of what was then Austria was also built in Stará Huť.

The Karel Čapek Memorial was established in 1963 in the house where the writer spent the last three years of his life. Following a comprehensive reconstruction of the building and exhibition, the memorial reopened on 25 April 1997; it is dedicated to Karel Čapek and his wife, the actress and writer Olga Scheinpflugová. The memorial can be reached by car, train and bus.

Routes and discoveries

The Karel Čapek Educational Trail has ten information panels about local history, fauna and flora, as well as places to rest. It follows the original route along which the writer Karel Čapek liked to walk. The first circular route is a walk of approximately 2 km and is particularly suitable for families with small children and seniors; the second circular route follows the original route preferred by Karel Čapek and is approximately 7 km long.

The third circular route of the Karel Čapek Educational Trail leads to the so-called Plechhamr. There, you must either cross the Kocába River and continue according to the map, or return to the junction and follow the second circular route back to the memorial. The educational trail is interactive: visitors can collect a worksheet at the memorial and complete it at the individual stations. It passes through an area where visible remains of iron processing have been preserved.

In the garden of the Karel Čapek Memorial, the Klikotoč sound totem offers three stories in Czech, English and Japanese.

At the Strž (Gorge) site, also known as Čapkárna, there is an exhibition about the history of the local ironworks and hammer mills. The site lies on the red hiking trail known as the Říp-Blaník Pilgrimage Route. The Strž (Gorge) site can be reached from a free car park by the Strž pond via a 400 m long, level pedestrian path on a paved surface. A free charger for e-bikes and bicycle racks are available at the site.

Cycling

Cycle Route 308 passes through Stará Huť and connects Dobříš, Stará Huť, Chramiště and Prostřední Lhota. The “Around the Chateau with Karel Čapek” cycle route leads to Stará Huť and the Karel Čapek Memorial. The first cycling trip on this route is approximately 13 km long and starts and ends in Dobříš.
